Visual Identity 虹伝説〜THE RAINBOW GOBLINS

Visual story telling

This is a redesign of The Rainbow Goblins, a 1981 concept album by famous Japanese jazz artist Masayoshi Takanaka. The project explores how sound can inform visual storytelling, translating the album’s psychedelic fusion jazz and fantastical narrative into a vibrant, character-led visual language.

The design reimagines the album as a collectible object, with attention to front and back covers, gatefold, and internal elements that together build an immersive world.

The Rainbow Goblins is a jazz-fusion album based on Ul de Rico’s picture book of the same name. It blends whimsical storytelling with rich, experimental soundscapes.

I chose to lean into a playful, flat-graphic aesthetic to reflect the vibrant energy of Takanaka’s music while reworking the goblin characters and florals in a more contemporary, characterful style.

Each goblin was designed not just as a mascot, but as a building block of this unique visual system, used across cover, insert, and more.

This gatefold design was heavily inspired by the layout of Monopoly boards. I wanted it to feel like a playful game map you could visually wander through.

The idea was to make the centre spread function like a journey the goblins are on, with curved pathways, repeating tile-like blocks, and dense floral elements guiding the eye across the fold.

I wanted to fully take advantage of the digital format. Unlike print, digital allows for motion, and I didn’t want to treat it as just another static layout. Since the album has such a strong narrative and character presence, introducing animation adds to storytelling.

The walking goblin loop was a way to bring the characters to life and make the digital mockup feel more immersive. Especially for platforms like Spotify, where attention spans are short, a small loop like this helps the design breathe and catch attention.
